I'm trying to decide whether to head west toward Nepal. I first began by researching Bhutan, but there are as many restrictions to enter Bhutan as there are for Tibet. So it's on my list, but just like entering Tibet, you are required to hire a tour guide to accompany you or join a tour. While I am definitely interested in visiting both, the western part of Sichuan is basically Tibet; some political dude or group created a dividing line, saying "This is China. This is Tibet." Know what I mean? Why go through all the hassle, when I am basically visiting Tibet when I head to Kangding, or further west and northwest? A quick view of the region sparked my interest in Nepal, home of Sagarmatha (which you call Mt. Everest) and Annapurna, and mountain sacred to many. Surprisingly, the valleys below the vertiginous Himalayas are comparably low in altitude; Kathmandu is around 4,000 ft., while the peaks above tower beyond 29,000 ft.! I had pursued that journey while living in Korea, but never made it over; flights were waaaaay too darn long. Now, India is closer and affordable! The path to India led me overland through Tibet, Bhutan, and Nepal. Then I was all over the web searching on info about visiting Nepal and trekking. Although it's modernised in Kathmandu, some of the treks would not be, and I don't feel adequately prepared for trekking: I don't have the gear, I'm out of shape, and I don't have enough time to prepare. I'm definitely keeping it on my list, and may visit Kathmandu for a week after I visit Rishikesh. I mean, they are right next door :-) So I've pretty much decided on India for my vacation. I'll do a Yoga/Ayurveda retreat at Maa for 2 weeks, then possibly head over to Kathmandu for a week. https://maayogashram.com/contact-us.html Wheeee......! I am seriously lucky with all the travel I have been able to do! I feel so grateful!
