The last half mile back to my house (thank Oz it's downhill and flat because the previous mile UP is not!). Passing behind the apartment complexes is a narrow road that curves around from the town center back to the highway and byway along the sea. This "back" road, overlooks my neighborhood and the sea. My apartment is at sea level, sort of behind or underneath the classic style Korean house you see photos, though you can't really see my building. The panorama shows the suburb where I live, Juklim-ri, the sea inlet to the right (east) and the oh-so-many apartment complexes. The big green thing is a golf practice club. The waterfront is beautiful! I get the view of the mountains from my roof. :-) 24 km around the island to the climbing wall and back through town. (2400 feet of elevation gain during this ride!)At "my" temple, I looked up by chance and saw a large statue of the Buddha on the hillside above the temple. This temple has no monk "in residence", like some temples, so it is overgrown and choked with weeds, but beautiful nonetheless, and my favorite quiet resting spot during my ride around the island. I can sit on the the temple steps undisturbed; only the sound of birds and buzzing of insects accompany my quiet moment of rest before I'm back to the sharp inclines of this mountain road. I ended up at the wall, but no one arrived until a few hours later. By then, I was pooped, had practiced some climbing maneuvers, and was ready to ride the 8 km home to rest! My reward for the 10 miles of pedaling around the long island road to the climbing wall (besides pushing myself further by climbing ha ha) is a delicious meal of fresh Mandu and JjinBbang to replenish energy for the ride back! Little 21 km to the temple and back. Yeah, that big peak in the background, I had to ride over that! Whew! many of the temples are hundreds of years old, some of the larger ones maybe a thousand? This one doesn't seem to be open regularly, which is a bummer. It's a great ride and I love to stop here, but can't gain access inside since it's locked. |
