YAY!! Got my Chinese Xiaomi phone working again! New SIM card activated, can get rid of the POS burner I got last year. I still have to wait to get my ARC card (Alien Registration Number) before I can get a permanent number; meaning to be able authenticate apps and link bank account... but that's only a few days out!
2 more days of Qtine! I made it! I am starting to go a bit stir crazy because the weather is freaking beautiful and the sunshine is so bright it's blinding in my aparta! I still go up on the roof several times each day and do mini-laps and play with Lil Skunk Mommie. Monday, I'll be present at our school staff meeting - live and in-person--yay! Then after lunch, head to the local clinic to get the final PCR test to clear me out of Qtine. Then, to the government office to get my ARC. With that, permanent phone #, bank account, health insurance and pension plan, and buy a car! Whoo Hoo!
Once my SIM is final, I can use the apps for grocery delivery, taxi, restaurant delivery, etc.
In Korea, the gov't actually takes care of its citizens in reality, so I'm getting great healthcare for a nominal cost (no deductible, no pre-existing condition BS, no for-profit medical system, and very, very, very tiny out-of-pocket costs: like $7 to see the doc, etc.). And my employer matches my contributions 100%, so I will max out my contributions... PLUS when I leave, I get both my deposits and my employer's---so I double my money, 100% gain! This added to my housing and meals provided... yay!
Sooooo many benefits of being in Korea, besides awesome food. Plus, I'm on an island!!! Trails start behind the school... I can't wait!!!
I'm hoping and hoping that I really enjoy teaching and living here, and that the company will massively up my salary for next year--somehow-- so that I don't have leave because my salary is too low. That's the downside: I'm taking a huge cut in pay being here, and it's not sustainable long-term--especially after a year's loss of income! We will see! It's like I just got here, but 2022 job season is already starting, and I'll have to negotiate next year's contract starting in December! But the wonderful aspect of all of this is that I am in Korea NOW, and although I do have to plan for next year, I'm working on enjoying the NOW that I'm here. Further, I'm SO CLOSE to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Nepal, and New Zealand... the other places I've got my eye on for the coming years! But if they will pay me what I was supposed to be making in China, then I'd stay! Get me a little Korean cottage near the beach or up a mountain... who knows what will happen between now and August! The 8 months is gonna fly, I have a feelin...
