I glanced upward and the shining caught my eyes:
Stars! As though I had never seen them before! We are not graced by stars in Chengdu For we are cursed with the grey skies of poisoned air. Mesmerized by their glimmer, A clear morning sky of the most sharp black Suddenly made itself known to me; Darkest midnight blue engulfed in the black of pre-dawn, A triangular constellation of three Parenthetical to the quarter-slice of white, creamy moon. As I gazed, I felt a deep yearning for nature-- Of which I am deprived daily. There is no frequent shining of sun, There is no greenery above or earth beneath my feet. Instead I am trapped by concrete, noise, and all the grotesque forms of humanity. I have known, but not accepted, that I need Mother Earth; Not just periodically interspersed with a polluted daily life, But I need nature every day! In that moment, as I cried tears of sadness at my loss, I knew: it is time to leave the grey dirt of the city And reside in warmer, cleaner, clearer climes. I want to look up and see stars! I want to look down and feel the earth under my feet! It's time to leave Chengdu.
